Rep. Mike Levin Statement on Senate Republicans’ Obstruction of Key Voting Rights Legislation

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) issued the following statement on Senate Republicans’ expected obstruction of the Freedom to Vote Act. In response to attacks on the right to vote in many states across the country, the bill would make commonsense reforms to ensure every eligible voter can participate in our democracy, combat partisan gerrymandering, and reform our campaign finance system to strengthen transparency and accountability.

“The Freedom to Vote Act is a critically important bill to ensure every eligible voter has access to the ballot box and bring transparency and accountability to our political process. In the wake of attacks on the right to vote in states across the country, passing this legislation is more important than ever. However, Senate Republicans’ obstruction of this legislation for their own perceived political benefit will have grave consequences for our democracy. It’s clear the Senate must now make an exception to the filibuster for voting rights legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act. The stakes are too high for this obstruction to continue.”
