Rep. Mike Levin Votes to Protect USPS and Reverse Dangerous Service Changes by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) voted to protect the United States Postal Service (USPS) and reverse Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s changes that have undermined the agency and caused dangerous delays in mail delivery. Earlier this week, Rep. Levin and local veterans met outside of the historic post office in Oceanside to highlight how DeJoy’s changes have caused veterans and many others to miss doses of life-saving medications.
“The United States Postal Service is essential for our democracy and for millions of Americans who depend on the agency to deliver medications, paychecks, ballots, and more,” said Rep. Levin. “Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s efforts to sabotage the agency with harmful new operational changes threaten the lives and livelihoods of countless Americans. His decision to temporarily pause those changes isn’t enough – we need to reverse the damage that DeJoy and the Trump Administration has already done. I was proud to cosponsor and vote for the Delivering for America Act, which will require the USPS to maintain the same level of services it provided at the beginning of the year and appropriate a $25 billion lifeline for the agency. Now Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans need to recognize the urgency of this crisis and pass the Delivering for America Act. Anything less is an attack on our democracy and every American who depends on this critical institution.”
Last June, Rep. Levin led 137 House Members from both parties in a letter to Senate leadership urging them to pass legislation providing $25 billion in emergency grants for the USPS. This is the same level of funding that the USPS Board of Governors - which is entirely made up of Trump appointees – recommend to keep the agency’s doors open. Revenue losses as a result of COVID-19 are expected to total $22 billion over the next 18 months.
