An Update on My Recent Work for You

Dear Neighbor,

The past few weeks have been quite busy in Congress. While House Republicans have been fighting over Kevin McCarthy’s future as Speaker, I’ve been working hard to serve the people of California’s 49th Congressional district by averting a government shutdown and introducing several pieces of legislation.

Here’s an update on my recent work for you.

Preventing a Government Shutdown

I voted to pass a short-term funding bill and avert a government shutdown because it was the right thing to do for the district, our country, our troops, and millions of hardworking families who need access to government services and benefits. We avoided a shutdown and disruption of services until November 17, 2023. Now, the Congress must work to pass a bipartisan government funding package for Fiscal Year 2024. Honoring Lisa Montes as September 2023 Constituent of the Month

Rep. Mike Levin Honors His September 2023 Constituent of the Month

I’m honored to recognize Lisa Montes of Solana Beach as my September Constituent of the Month. Lisa is a descendent of the original Mexican families of La Colonia de Eden Gardens, and she has a passion for giving back to her community that was instilled in her by her ancestors. Addressing Migrant Street Releases

Rep. Mike Levin Speaks About the Need for Additional Resources to Address Migrant Street Releases

The recent migrant street releases in Oceanside are deeply concerning and are a consequence of our broken immigration system. I’m grateful for the assistance and support that our local partners and NGOs have been providing to address this situation. It’s clear we need more federal resources to help these organizations and communities that receive asylum seekers. I’m fighting for more funding that will provide critical relief for our district, as well as for comprehensive immigration reform to address the situation at the border.

Taking Action on Gas Price Hikes

Rep. Mike Levin Takes Action to Lower Gas Prices

I’m concerned about the rise in gas prices over the past few weeks, and potential market manipulation by fossil fuel interests. I wrote a letter to the Federal Trade Commission asking for an investigation into potential market-distorting behavior between traders and refiners discovered by the State of California that could be hurting consumers across the state. Read my full letter here.

Supporting Military Families and Veterans in CA-49

The men and women who risk their lives for our country should never struggle to feed their families. I reintroduced the bipartisan Military Dependents School Meal Eligibility Act to help expand access to food assistance programs and help more military families qualify for free and reduced-price school meals. I also introduced the bipartisan Passports for Purple Hearts Act to waive all fees associated with getting and renewing a passport for Purple Heart recipients. This is the least we can do to show our appreciation for those who have sacrificed for our country.

Removal of Speaker McCarthy

Rep. Mike Levin on His Vote on the Motion to Vacate

The vote on the motion to vacate marks a serious and historic chapter for the House of Representatives. Casting my vote to remove Kevin McCarthy from the Speakership was not a decision I made lightly, but it was in the best interest of the people I represent. In speaking with my constituents, it’s clear that they are tired of all the partisan extremism that has been characteristic of his time as Speaker. I hope that the next Speaker is willing to put aside extreme, partisan politics to work in the best interest of the American people, but no matter who the next Speaker is, my priority will always be serving you.
